My version makes reference to the fact that the three lakes supposedly home to the Oklahoma Octopus are all man-made lakes dating back to the 20th century. It got a big boost in popularity with the Animal Planet series Lost Tapes, every episode of which was a found-footage horror movie about some cryptid or other. The oldest reference I can find to it is in Michael Newton’s Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology from 2005.
